Faction, subfaction, and independent group leads are in charge of various groups on the sim. Main factions are open to join (and you can join their groups without needing to go through a process). When you join a main faction, you must state this on your application in order to receive faction perks. You can not be in more than one main faction, however, you can work for another faction or subfaction if all parties are agreeable. If you leave your faction, you lose your perks. In order to join a new faction after leaving an old one, you must speak to the faction leader or their representative to make sure they understand that you have left a former faction.
The faction system of CV is designed to be modular and dynamic. Groups with interest will grow in power, and those which are not of interest may operate in an "NPC" mode, existing in the background as something in the world, but not really coming into play. If you wish to join a subfaction for which there is no lead, you will need to speak to the main faction leader.
In order to join a subfaction or independent group, you must petition the leader of that group and go through whatever process (if any) is required to join.

Independent Groups are player-run groups which have been accepted as registered groups for the Convergence universe by the administrative staff. They are allowed to have an official "CV" labeled group, will have a labeled forum, and may be granted a small rent-free HQ if space is available. Note, in order to have a group accepted, it must usually be shown to have RP-driving potential, to accept outsiders who qualify, and have a consistent playerbase of eight or more members. Unofficial groups who do not meet these requirements are fine to play in an unofficial capacity.
