In Convergence's lore, there is a "Multiverse". This means that there are many universes which exist simultaneously, but separately. Some of these Universes are small, maybe just room-sized. Some of them are huge, containing many millions or billions of galaxies. Some Universes are magical, or can only be entered by certain types of creatures under certain circumstances. And some Universes overlay other Universes. Some Gods are powerful enough to persist in many Universes, and some can only exist in one. All in all, each Universe is called a "Realm". And although there are infinite Realms, understanding the ones that are most important to the story of Juniper will be helpful when navigating the lore.
Juniper Realm: The Juniper Realm is very like the Earth Realms. Physics works...pretty good. Magic works really good. And some places are highly technological. Juniper exists in a solar system with one sun, and is, itself, a massive planet about the size of, well, Jupiter. Not much is known about Juniper itself, as venturing out of the city to explore is dangerous. All player characters in our story will have some ability to exist in the Juniper realm, even if they (like Wraiths) simultaneously exist in another realm. The Juniper Realm is, for all intents and purposes, our "reality" in the story. It's where you are, and where things are generally happening. Much of Juniper's advanced society was destroyed during what is referred to as the Great War, which ended long before the Fornax arrived on Juniper. Those who remain now live in pre-industrial societies, for the most part, mostly farming or hunting communities. People avoid the cities due to dangers there.
Convergence Realm: Convergence, the original Convergence, was a pocket Realm created by the Ancient Engineers as a refuge for various species. It was hidden, but eventually found by its arch-nemesis The Dark. The Dark is both a Realm and a malignant force. It grows rapidly, overtaking whatever it touches in absolute malignant chaos. It eventually overtook Convergence, and as a last resort, mages within the city performed a ritual and sealed a pact with a demonic entity to move the city to another place, avoiding complete ruination. When moved, it showed up on one of the Earth Realms. (See below.) Convergence is a magical place where technology and magic can blend far more easily than other lands.
Earth Realms: Earth Realms are universes which contain, well, the planet Earth, and more importantly - humanity. Earth is an anomaly, and it has far more iterations than many other things. Many people believe this is because humanity has a deeper potential than most races. And that humanity, when fully evolved, will achieve things that will save the multiverse. Others believe this is simply because humans are so...useful and necessary to so many things. Like being O- blood type, humanity just is able to combine with others in so many ways, for breeding, as worshippers, or even as food. Each Earth Realm is just a little different from the next, and some may be massively different. Maybe the Vikings conquered the planet in one, maybe disease was eliminated in another. Although this technically means there are infinite versions of your character, in theory...in practice you only get the one. If you don't really understand these various Earths, that's OK. It's mostly backstory that has to do with CV2 (this is CV3) and it's not super important to the story of Juniper. Just know there are a lot of Earths and they're all a little different and contain humans.
Earth Prime: When speaking about Earth Prime, we're generally talking about the Earth that Convergence first travelled to after escaping the Dark the first time. This was a post-apocalyptic Earth, where much of the population had been destroyed by a disease known as D13. Supernaturals, who had before that point been hidden from humanity, came together to form The Consortium and find a cure for D13. At the same time, they provided a sort of overarching government for the populace. Eventually, however, the Dark arrived again, and in order to escape it, Convergence (and truthfully the entire population of Earth Prime) was transferred once more - this time to New Earth.
New Earth: New Earth is very like Earth Prime except ever so slightly different. For instance, everyone on New Earth was already dead from a particularly virulent strain of D13 when everyone from Earth Prime showed up. Pepsi was called Papsi. Pizza Hut was known as Pizza Shack. And things like that. New Earth was eventually invaded by Fae from Avalon who had been infected with a magical form of D13 that made them insane. Allies from the Shadow Realm known as Fomorii eventually helped the people of New Earth defeat the Avalonians, but...not before the Unseelie Queen, Mab, cursed New Earth to be devoured by the Dark again. At that point, they had to flee once more, this time through portals, where they ended up on the Juniper Realm.
Pale Realm: Although some Realms are created specifically for a single purpose, generally by gods or magical entities, the most famous of these is the Pale Realm. It was created by the Ancient Engineers at the behest of a group of gods in order to house the souls of the dead for sorting and processing before letting them be returned to their respective gods. Unfortunately, when the Ancient Engineers found out that some of these gods intended to use those souls as basically fuel for their own power, they found a way to shut out the gods from entering the Pale Realm. (Though, it should be said that not all who pass on from the Pale Realm back to their gods are used in this way.) Because the Pale Realm is not controlled by anyone in specific, it has grown into a tangled mass that is difficult to navigate, and difficult to understand. The best way to think of it is as a Realm that overlays or is adjacent to reality. Those who are denizens of the Pale Realm see both the Pale Realm...and the world of Jupiter. The Pale Realm also connects to the various Earth Realms, however...it is so massive and hard to navigate that it would probably be a seriously difficult undertaking for any Wraiths to peek in on one of the other Earth Realms. And, even if they could find it, it's unknown if they could ever navigate their way back to tell the tale. There are portions of the Pale Realm which do not connect to other realms, and these...Deep Pale Realm areas are nodes where Wraiths can go to be separate from the world of the living.
Shadow Realm: The Shadow Realm seems like it should be an evil place, but it's not. It's merely a realm containing shadows, and not a lot of light. Connected to most other Realms via shadows, only certain types of races can enter the Shadow Realm. The Shadow Realm is also, notably, the realm where the Fomorii slept whilst the Olde Ones and their descendants inhabited Avalon. Since the Fomorii now inhabit Avalon, it is reasonable to think that the Olde Ones now sleep in the Shadow Realm.
Avalon: A high magic realm which was, for a long time, inhabited by the Fae. The two courts, Seelie and Unseelie, warred endlessly over the resources there until eventually Avalon was closed off, stranding a few Fae on Earth. However, the Fae still inside Avalon evolved differently from the Earth Fae, and eventually became a separate race. When the doors to Avalon re-opened they found they were susceptible to D13, a disease that had devastated the planet, and most of the fae went mad and became power hungry. Eventually, they were defeated by the people of Earth in solidarity with the Fomorii, denizens of the Shadow Realm.
The Abyss: The Abyss is the home Realm of the Abyssal race. It was perpetually fought over by two gods until eventually their war basically destroyed the Realm. The Abyss is known as a Strange Realm, where physics and magic tends to work very differently than most places, so coming to the Juniper Realm has weakened the Abyssals greatly. Nonetheless, they are still a match for most other races. It's just taking them some time to really get integrated into this new world they find themselves in.
The Realm of Doors: The Realm of Doors is almost exactly what it sounds like -- it's a Realm that contains almost infinite doors. And these doors connect to other Realms. Although finding and accessing the Realm of Doors can be difficult, and navigating it almost impossible, it is technically possible to get ANYWHERE in the multiverse from the Realm of Doors. It's also possible to get completely lost in the Realm of Doors and never find your way back. There is, however, no death in this Realm, so if one finds themselves there, they can wander endlessly. The only way to die is to be killed by the mysterious entity who controls this Realm, an entity with many names and forms. He's also your best chance at a guide.
The Spirit Realm/Ley Realm: The Spirit Realm, also known by some as the Ley Realm, is similar to the Pale Realm in some ways, in that it is very connected to the mortal realm. The Spirit Realm houses a current of magic that often becomes woven into nodules which are then animated by that magic. Some call these creatures Spirits, and venerate them. Others believe that their existance hampers the true flow of magic, and that they are more like a cancer in the Ley Realm, which should be pure and flowing magic. At any rate, this realm is difficult to enter by most except those who are very deeply tied to it, such as Mages or the Ethereal races. But the flow of magic in the mortal realm can be very deeply affected by events in the Spirit Realm.
Bright Realm: The Bright Realm is an extraordinarily large universe, with many galaxies and planets. Because of this, many different races inhabit the Bright Realm without actually knowing about other races inhabiting the Bright Realm. Once, it was said that some races, when they died, went to the Bright Realm instead of the Pale Realm. Unfortunately, the Bright Realm was recently attacked by the Dark, and much of it was destroyed. Almost all of those races now end up in the Pale Realm when they die, including the Sylvani and the Faemorii.
The Dark: The eternal nemesis of Convergence is The Dark. It is both a Realm, and a force. Unlike most Realms which are always a similar size or grow or shrink slowly, the Dark expands rapidly, overtaking other Realms. Inside of the Dark are its Denizens, creatures of entropy and malice. The Dark has eaten many other Realms, turning them into...twisted versions of themselves existing inside of the ever-growing Dark Realm. It is hard to fight because contact with it tends to cause 'Dark taint', slowly but surely making all that fights it INTO Dark entities.
Valhalla and Folkvangr: The realms belonging to Odin and Freyja respectively where the fallen await, feast, and train for the battle of Ragnarok. These Realms exist within the Nine Worlds of Yggdrasil, a series of interconnected Realms ruled by the gods of the Norse pantheon.
Heaven: The home realm of Ael, the most powerful of the gods, his Celestials, and the faithful that have passed beyond the Pale Realm to return to Ael's presence. Heaven is said to be a Realm free of pain or worldly concern, where one basks joyfully in the presence of the Lord. Though to hear the Nephilim tell it, Heaven is also a prison of sorts.
Hell: Once ruled by the mad god, Satan, Hell has since been taken over by Lucifer and his followers. It is said to contain a single, vast planet, with both twisted and beautiful landscapes. It also has a property of being almost impossible to find, for some reason. Many believe that whatever it is that drove Satan mad, and appears to have distracted Lucifer to the point that he's no longer responsive or seen on Hell, has to do with whatever hides Hell from her enemies.
